November 5, 2001 - LensPlus
is excited to announce the new 2Plus LE-Adapter. This adapter works just
like our original but will accept much larger eyepieces (over 2 inches). This is
just what the digibirders who use Kowa, Swarovski, and Leica scopes have been
requesting. Also it will adapt those large eyepiece telescopes and other optical
devices.
We will continue to sell our original
LE-Adapter because the compact size makes it much more suitable for microscopes
and other eyepieces of smaller diameter. Pricing is to be very close to the
original LE-Adapter cost and delivery is expected within 6 weeks. Please
E-mail us if you would like further information.

I
use a
Nikon 990 digital camera and trinocular compound and dissecting scopes with
wide field eyepieces. The camera is attached to the scope via a LE-Adapter
available at
http://www.ccfabuja.org. If you don't have a trinocular you can just
mount the camera on one of the eyepieces. Below is a photo of the set up I use.
I find it much easier to work via a TV monitor. I use the video out from the
camera into a TV with an RCA jack. This way you see everything that appears on
the camera LCD. I also recommend using the AC adapter, otherwise you run through
batteries very quickly and the LCD times out. You must use the Nikon
remote to eliminate camera shake. You can't use the self timer because that only
works in macro mode. I shoot in the infinity mode and focus via the microscope.
You do not want the camera to try to focus because it rarely gets it right. I
mostly use the program mode (A-REC). Vignetting is a common problem.
You can reduce it in two ways: 1. use the optical
zoom 2. use a relatively large aperture (small f-stop). Take several photos of
each slide and slightly vary the microscope focus each time. This is one of the
main advantages of a digital camera, not having to pay for film and developing!
For "web publishing" I take the photos at 1024 x 768 and crop them to 800 x 600.
I save in jpeg format with medium compression. Microscope lamps vary
considerably and the color temperature changes depending on how high you turn up
the lamp. Play with the white balance and light levels. Once you find the most
accurate stick with those settings.

DigiCams Review
The LE-Adapter makes it simple to connect your digicam to all sorts of optical
devices whether they were made for it or not. This solves the problems of not
being able to find the right threaded adapter ring or how to attach something
that has no accessory threads to begin with. As long as the eyepiece or optical
device has a diameter between 1/2 and 1-5/8 inches you can clamp onto it with
the LE-Adapter.
Over the years I have received many
emails from users wishing to mate a hi-res digicam to a microscope in either a
laboratory or medical environment. I'm happy to report that the LE-Adapter is
just the device that you've been looking for. The best digicam is a Coolpix 950
or 990 with its 3x optical zoom and superior macro capabilities, not to mention
the ability to swivel the LCD screen independently of the lens. Other digicams
can also be mated to microscopes, don't forget that you can use the video out
feature and plug it into a TV -- it's difficult to beat a hi-res 9" or
larger TV set as a color viewfinder!
I used the LE-Adapter to mount a
Walter 8x32 monocular on the Coolpix 995 (see the first photo up above) and the
results were very similar to what we have seen with the Kenko 8x32 or the
CrystalView Sharpshooter monoculars when used on the Coolpix 990 or 995. It
takes a little practice to make this combination work but shooting in macro mode
with the LCD on and using continuous AF certainly helps. The camera and lens
must be on a tripod, shooting with this extreme focal length the focus is
critical and you won't get many useable shots if trying to do this handheld.
If you want or need a very versatile
lens mounting device the LE-Adapter has got to be one of the best solutions out
there.
